D'Lilac and Kat Von D

soooooooo this is beautiful lady gaga wearing the purple lips that inspired me to purchase lilac lipstick... too bad i can't wear all purple and no pants :( instead, i wore (100% CR outfit.. eek!) a black blazer, silver singlet, shiny black jeans and black ballet slippers... gaga's outfit owns.

i was tossing up between just going a glossy, nude eye with liquid liner or with a purple look...

i decided to do a 'cut-crease' look with purples from the Kat Von D True Romance Palette (check back to the previous post to see the colours) - that way i get to show you two of my new things

Urban Decay Primer Potion

an alternative is Too Faced Shadow Insurance from Kit

MAC Brow Set in Beguile

gives a guide for the shape of the shadow

MAC Paintpot in Painterly

all over lid up to eyebrow

MAC Eye Shadow in Gesso (matte white)

fluffy brush (MAC #217)

eyelid and above brow bone

gives a pale, even base

Urban Decay White Rabbit (shimmery white)

fluffy brush

over Gesso

creates more depth and counteracts the dry, flat look that matte shadow can give

Kat Von D Sinner (matte purple)

thin angle brush

draw a line through your crease, pulling it out a little further than the ends of your eyes (inner corner and outer corner)

fade it up toward the eyebrow using a pencil/bullet brush

Kat Von D Sinner

fluffy brush

move the colour slowly and carefully into an S-shape

beginning at the inner end of the line, take it up under the start of the eyebrow, flatten it out and bring it down toward outer corner of the eye, then back up toward the end of the eyebrow

Kat Von D Rad Purple (sparkly, deep purple)

fluffy brush

repeat S-shape blending, alternating between Sinner and Rad Purple until the desired depth of colour is reached

MAC Eye Shadow in Electra (light shimmery grey)

include in the S-shape blending if the purple colour is too purple

Kat Von D Galeano (light shimmery purple)

flat brush

over eyelid to maintain purple-theme and paleness

MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon (matte black)

angle brush

line the upper lashline and along the lower lashline

Kat Von D Rad Purple

pencil/bullet brush

lightly over the black shadow line to blend and fade a little

MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder

waterline and tightline (lower and upper inner rims)

my new favourite mascara!! so cheap. so amazing. CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume.

took me ages to find the black one, because all the supermarkets i looked in only had the brown black in stock. finally i found it and it was on special for $12.95.. hell yeah :)

this is a wacky angle, but i hope you can kind of see the 'drama' of the 'cut-crease'

i'm hoping that you can see the contouring that i did for this look in this light and at this angle...

products used to create the deep cheek look:

MAC Bronzer in Golden

in the hollow under the cheekbone - suck your cheeks in to find it

NARS Blush in Orgasm

in a straight line along the cheek bone from the iris//outer corner of the eye, up to the hairline

MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in By Candlelight

just above blush, along the top of the cheekbone to highlight and brighten

and, of course, lips are Lime Crime Lipstick in D'Lilac

underneath, i used Napoleon Auto Pilor Lip Primer

later, i added MAC Viva Glam Gaga lipsick (pale matte pink) into the very top centre of my bottom lip

thank you for reading guys!

let me know what you think :)

"laura... it looks like you have texta on your eyes..."

another astute observation offered by one of my grade twos today - explanation is that i did my liquid eyeliner in the car... fail! never do it.

the look i was trying was the lady gaga telephone video prison scene - i will do it properly (not in a moving vehicle during peak hour) and post photos and instructions another day for you :)

THREE PACKAGES IN ONE DAY! YES!

package number one: the brush guard - variety pack
very cheap, so get on it

it's a net-type case that slides over your brush - so your brushes don't end up with bed-hair in your make-up case!

this is my blush brush (really old Mary Kay one that i love because of its pink bristles)

this is also great because when you wash your brushes, you can stand them bristles-down in a glass so that the water drains off the end of the bristles - you don't want to dry the brush standing up because the water settles and disrupts the glue that holds the bristles together at their base.

package number two: NARS Blush in Orgasm

i'm sure you all know this product very well, but here is a photo of it :)

gorgeous peachy-pink glowy blush colour (lol so i have an alternative to bronzer!)

package number three: Kat Von D (Sephora) True Romance Eye Shadow Palette in Beethoven

total ebay impulse purchase
BUT
now that it has arrived, i do love the colours and am looking forward to showing you how i've used it!

colours from left:
- lucifer
- speed blue
- razor gray
- tequila
- sinner
- rad purple
- leather
- galeano

so far i can see:
- a purple smokey eye using rad purple, sinner, galeano and lucifer
AND
- something using speed blue, razor gray and tequila

wowzers long post... hope you made it all the way through!
thank you for reading!
if you have any suggestions, requests or questions, please comment :)

rainbow eyes, here i come!

"umm miss laura, you look a bit different today..."

halfway through reading a picture book to my Grade 2s this morning, Charlie decided to share this observation with the class... i'm not sure if they appreciated the alien-looking white eyes, but the girls definitely liked the braid - by the end of the day they all had little plaited sections at the front of their hair.

so, this look is from a MakeUpByTiffanyD tutorial on youtube - Kim Kardashian's 2009 Emmy appearance

  • prime prime prime... this look will crease heaps if you don't!
  • using a flat brush, i put the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (white) all over the lid, up to the eyebrow and under the lower lashline
  • with a flat brush again, cover the liner with a white shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Gesso) to dry it up because the liner will be sticky
  • apply a shimmery pale blue (random loose shadow that came free with my crushcosmetics.com.au order) on the outer 'V' area on the lid, two-thirds along the upper lashline and lightly along the lower lashline
  • apply a pale brown or gold along the brow just to deepen the colour, so it doesn't look quite so flat (i used MAC Eye Shadow in Nylon because i don't have any light browns yet)
  • re-do the white shadow around your tear duct
  • using the NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk, line your waterline
  • black mascara and eyebrows and done!
  • i used a pinky-gold lipstick, anything nude-y will work
BING! eyes open :)

it's a pretty wacky look, but it's very fresh and bright and awake-looking, and quick to do!

i'm expecting FIVE different make-up orders in the mail... someone delete my PayPal account... please...
i'll show-and-tell when they arrive! yay :D

sugarplum fairy

most of you will know that i am nuts about youtube make up tutorials, so many of the looks i put on here come from those.

the three main ones on rotation for me are:
- Kandee Johnson
- MakeUp By Tiffany D
- Michelle Phan

this week, i discovered a new one, and have almost seen all her videos already lol keen!
- Miss Jessica Harlow

she has great, short, easy to understand looks - this is the first look of hers that i have tried: 'Sugar Plum Fairy'

- cover entire eyelid with:
  • a primer (Urban Decay Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance from Kit)
  • white eyeliner as a base (my NYX jumbo liner in Milk hasn't arrived yet, so i used Chanel Le Crayon Kohl in Blanc)
  • white eye shadow with a flat brush to dry up and hold the liner in place and give you a blending base (MAC Eye Shadow in Gesso - matte white)
- starting at the outer end of the crease, place a matte, darkish purple, using a fluffy brush to keep it blended (Urban Decay Queen and Underland)

- shade and blend that into the shape that you like/want - round or with the point toward the end of the eyebrow like i have here

- once it is well blended, using a bullet shaped brush, focus some colour in the outer third of your crease to deepen the hollow

- on the 'outer V' (outer third of the eyelid) and up onto the brow bone, blend a dark grey to emphasise the shape of the shadow

- fill in lid area with a lighter purple (MAC Eye Shadow in Beautiful Iris or Urban Decay Curiouser) with a flat brush, use this colour also, to soften and fade out the top of the dark purple shadow

- redo the matte white under the eyebrow, follow either with a shimmer pigment or sparkly white shadow like Urban Decay's White Rabbit

- line the upper lashes with black liner (whichever form you like - i used MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder because i was wearing this during the day, liquid/gel liner would give a more defined shape and would be stronger for nighttime - or anytime...)

- line under your lower lashes with whatever turquoise product you have - i used Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Flipside, and covered it with MAC Eye Shadow in Aquadisiac using an angled liner brush

- line your waterline with white eyeliner - again, i used Chanel, but the NYX Jumbo will show up more

- use a bullet brush to put some shimmer around your tearduct as a highlight

  • Brows: MAC Brow Set in Beguile
  • Lashes: Dior Diorshow in Black
  • Face: Revlon ColourStay in 110 Ivory
  • Cheeks: MAC Bronzer in Golden, random Lamcome hot pink, MAC Mineralise Skinfinish in By Candlelight
let me know what you think, and i will do my best not to leave it so long between posts!!
thank you for reading :)
